The Glass Instrument Shop is located in Room 1136 of the Biological Sciences Building. This is a full service glassblowing facility providing design consultation, fabrication, and repair of glass research apparatus.
Capabilities
- Fabrication and repair of glassware: borosilicate, quartz, aluminosilicate, and other glasses
- Cutting, drilling, and grinding of glass tubing, rod, and plate
- Glass-to-metal sealing
- Encapsulation, evacuation, back fill, and sealing of specimens in glass tubing
- Silvering and other special coatings
- Fabrication to catalog specifications or your own
- Design and materials consultation to meet your requirements
Equipment
- Three glassworking lathes with bore diameters ranging from 2 5/8"(67mm) to 7 1/4"(184 mm)
- Assorted lathe and bench burners and torches
- Two annealing ovens for borosilicate and borosilicate/quartz
- Portable torch set-up for on-site work
- Diamond and silicon carbide wet saws
- Two wet belt sanders
- Flat plate grinder
- Large and small diameter drill presses with diamond core drills
- Diamond router
- Machine mill modified for machining of glass
Inventory
- Borosilicate and quartz tubing and rod in most of the usually used sizes
- Joints, stopcocks, valves, sintered glass disks, flasks, and other commonly used components
- Sealing, grading, and specialty glasses, many no longer in production
