Chemistry Grad Application FAQ

  1. May I apply for Winter/Summer admission to the grad program?

No, admission is only made for the Fall semester.

  2. I would like to apply for the M.S. program, how do I proceed?

We do not admit students into the M.S. program. If you are interested in research you should apply to the Ph.D. program.

  3. How should I apply?

Online application is greatly preferred. The online process opens in late October or early November for the following Fall semester. Apply at: http://www.gradadmissions.wayne.edu/apply.php

  4. When do I need to submit all the materials?

We recommend that international students have all materials submitted to us by February to have the best chance of admission and support. Application should be done online, and transcripts and letters of recommendation should be sent the Department.

  5. Where do I send these materials?

    Melissa Barton
    Academic Services Officer
    Department of Chemistry
    Wayne State University
    5101 Cass Ave
    Detroit MI 48202 USA

    Contact: Prof. A. Suits 313 577-9008

  6. Should I also send the materials to the graduate school?

No, once your file is complete and we take action on your application we will forward all materials to the graduate school.

  7. My transcripts are not in english, is that OK?

No. Your official transcripts in your native language and in English, as well as the degree certificate in your native language and English are required.

  8. Are GRE's required? What are the minimum TOEFL scores, etc?

Although not strictly required, we strongly recommend that international students submit their GRE scores. Your application may be adversely affected if you do not.

The absolute minimum iBT score is 79, computer TOEFL 213, or written TOEFL 550. However, we may consider higher scores inadequate based on our experience with scoring in different countries.

May I submit copies of my TOEFL/GRE for consideration?

You may submit unofficial copies of GRE or TOEFL for evaluation purposes but official copies are required before a formal offer may be made.

  9. Will I be considered for financial support?

All students admitted to the PhD program receive generous support in teaching or research assistantships. Note: you do not need to submit financial support documents with your application. If accepted, your letter of offer for assistantship will serve as proof of financial support.

  10. Can you tell me whether my application is complete?

We begin examining applications in January. If you have not been contacted by early February, you may email to inquire about the status of your file.
