Dr. Claudio Verani, P.I.

 



Claudio Verani was born in Orleans, Brazil. He obtained his M.Sc. (1996, honors) in Chemistry at UFSC, Brazil with Ademir Neves working on biomimetic models for copper enzymes. His PhD was earned in 2000 from the Wieghardt group at the Max-Planck Institute for Bioinorganic Chemistry in Germany as a DAAD awardee. There he developed models to understand magnetic coupling in multispin species. He also worked as a postdoctoral researcher from 2000 to 2002 in the Karlin group at the Johns Hopkins University modeling aspects of dioxygen activation by citochrome-c-oxidase.

At Wayne State since 2002, he was promoted to associate professor in 2008 and to Professor of Chemistry in 2013. His research interests involve (i) the merge of coordination chemistry and surface science for molecular electronics and (ii) the development of new Earth-abundant catalysts for water splitting. His group utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that includes synthetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, magnetic, surface, and computational methods. In his spare time he enjoys listening and making music and collecting historic pottery.
